Maintaining the correct gear, and being able to shift between them as required, keeps you in top control of your car. If you’re experiencing issues with your transmission and clutch the driving experience starts to become significantly more difficult. In more extreme cases issues with your clutch or transmission can cause a loss of control while driving and lead to more dangerous situations. Luckily transmission issues are usually easily identifiable as they become noticible through difficulties in starting the car or shifting between gears, leading to stalls and stops. If you start to notice issues with your transmission then contact a service professional.

Common Clutch and Transmission Problems

The transmission is such an integral part of cars that is used every single time we drive. As such, we can usually identify issues pretty quickly,, butthe other side of the coin is that smaller issues are sometimes overlooked. A small problem, like a sticky or dragging clutch, becomes normalised when we experience it on every drive we take. Keep an eye out for these common indications of transmission issues that you may have normalised as just part of your everyday driving experience.

Grinding, slipping and shaking

When we put off a service we can start to normalise bumps, jumps and jerking motions during our driving experience. But your car is supposed to drive smoothly. Grinding, gear slips or shaking parts are an indication that something is wrong! Damage to your transmission is a common cause of these kinds of issues. As a mechanically heavy aspect of vehicles a transmission that needs repair can have quite the physical affect on the vehicle as a whole.

A lack of smoothness while shifting between gears is particularly of concern in an automatic transmission. An automatic vehicle is designed specifically for the automation of gear shifts so if you are noticing that the change between gears is jerky or difficult then it’s time for a service.

Fluid Issues

As with many of the systems in your car, your transmission and clutch are assisted in their job through fluids for lubrication and pressure. Unresponsiveness, slipping or issues getting your car into certain gears can all be results of issues with your fluid. Leaking or low fluid is one of the most common causes of this issue so ensure your transmission’s fluid levels are checked regularly and kept topped up.

Strange smells are also heralds of mechanical issues with your car. Overheating transmission fluid is often an overlooked cause of strange smells in and around our cars. However its worth checking your transmissions fluids in the event of a burning smell. As one of the jobs of the fluid is often cooling of the mechanics around it, overheating fluid can cause extensive and expensive damage to your car.

Unresponsive Mechanics

Often the easiest way to identify that something is wrong with your transmission is when you try to engage it and nothing happens. If your clutch is slipping or unresponsive then it’s pretty clearly time for a tune up. A lot of the common causes of unresponsive systems, such as there being too much slack in the clutch pedal, are relatively straightforward repairs for your mechanic.

But despite how common or easily repaired the issues may be your car slipping out of, or being unable to change, gears is a serious matter. Any problems resulting in unresponsive transmissions should be resolved quickly to prevent cascading damage.
