Common Battery Problems

We’ve all had the moment when we realise that our battery has gone flat and our car won’t start. Whether you’ve had to call roadside assist for an impromptu battery change or get a jump start from a kind passerby, it’s a very common experience for drivers. By focusing on battery health in your vehicle’s regular service schedule you can catch any potential problems before they impact your driving experience.

Power problems

The most common issue with your battery will be issues with it supplying power to your car. There are a multiple issues tied to power supply in your cars battery. If your car’s electronics, lights or radio for example, have been accidentally left on while the car is not running your battery may simply be out of power. Excessive loading of the battery, such as powering portable DVD players or other car accessories, can have a detrimental effect on the overall health of the batter causing it to drain faster then expected. And, as the battery is responsible for supplying the power to start the engine in most car models, start-stop driving where the engine is being turned on and off, can also negatively affect the battery leading to more regular service requirements.

Corrosion

If you’re experiencing issues with your battery there may be a physical fault that is causing corrosion of the electronics. Corrosion issues are dangerous to both the health of your battery and your vehicle overall. Acid leaks can cause damage to other areas of the engine, loose connections can cause breakdowns or sparks inside the engine housing. While you can do physical inspection of your battery at home, as well as checking the tightness of the connections, it’s always worth having a regular service to make sure there is nothing you’re missing.

Even if everything goes perfect with your battery you should still have it changed after around 3 years to ensure physical integrity is maintained.

Failure to charge

There may not be anything wrong with your battery itself and instead there may be an issue with it not being charged while your car is running. When operating as intended your cars battery will be charged while your engine is running. This is done by the alternator, if your battery seems like it’s not damaged the issue may lie with your alternator. Changing/repairing alternators is a trickier task then basic car maintenance so if you suspect there is an issue with your alternator you should book in with a trained mechanic.

What to expect from a service focused on your car battery.

Sometimes your battery service will be a simple clean, replacement of the fluids and tightening of the connections to ensure continued peak and safe usage. However if your battery has run completely flat, if there is physical damage or corrosion or if the connections have worn out then your service may need to include a full replacement of the battery. Remember to not leave your cars electrics running, not plug in too many accessories and regularly service your battery to ensure it gets the longest possible lifespan before needing a replacement. A regular battery service can help avoid the need for a roadside callout!
